Psalm 4 in Dorian mode of Raven 2 Tuning

Saturday, September 21st, 2013

This setting of Psalm 4 was commissioned by John O’Sullivan. The commission was for a composition in Dorian mode of Raven V2 tuning. (For more on John’s Raven tuning follow this link) I present here three versions, piano only and one with my vocal added times three and a capella. On the last version I did tweak my vocals with v-vocal editor (but NOT to 12 equal) to take care of my weak ability to sustain a pitch accurately since here I can’t hide behind a piano.

Psalm 4 (NIV)

Answer me when I call to you,
O my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress;
be merciful to me and hear my prayer.

How long, O men, will you turn my glory into shame?
How long will you love delusions and seek false Gods?
Know that the Lord has set (apart)* the godly for himself;
The Lord will hear when I call to him.

In your anger do not sin;
when you are on your beds,
search your hearts and be silent.
Offer right sacrifices and trust in the Lord.

Many are asking “Who can show us any good?”
Let the light of your face shine upon us, O Lord.
You have filled my heart with greater joy
than when their grain and new wine abound.

I will lie down and sleep in peace,
for you alone, O Lord,
make me dwell in safety.

    raven_by_chris_08 My thanks to “Chris ’08” who drew this excellent artwork. It was as far as I can tell separated from its creator when I found it.

    I See the Raven is an electronic piece using a Korg MS2000 exclusively except for the drum kit. All of the synthesizer parts were performed. The tuning used is John O’Sullivan’s Raven V2 as a “user tuning” in the synthesizer.

More tuning information is here at John’s website. The score is here which includes the cents value for the Rook tuning. The piece was composed and realized using Sibelius and Pianoteq.
