The Tempest Prognosticator

Saturday, December 31st, 2016

In 24 edo (largely) using Shoom, Gestrument, and Bowls HD => download

The tempest prognosticator comprises twelve pint bottles in a circle around and beneath a large bell. Atop the glasses are small metal tubes which contain a piece of whalebone and a wire connecting them to small hammers positioned to strike the bell. In his essay Merryweather described the workings of the device:
“ After having arranged this mouse trap contrivance, into each bottle was poured rain water, to the height of an inch and a half; and a leech placed in every bottle, which was to be its future residence; and when influenced by the electromagnetic state of the atmosphere a number of leeches ascended into the tubes; in doing which they dislodged the whalebone and caused the bell to ring. ”
— George Merryweather

The leech would have difficulty entering the metal tubes but would endeavour to do so if sufficiently motivated by the likelihood of bad weather. By ringing the bell it would signify that that individual leech is indicating that a storm is approaching. Merryweather referred to the leeches as his “jury of philosophical councilors” and that the more of them that rang the bell the more likely that a storm would occur.

In his essay Merryweather also noted other features of the design, including the fact that the leeches were placed in glass bottles placed in a circle to prevent them from feeling “the affliction of solitary confinement”

Nevadatite for Two Classical Guitars (24 edo) with score

Thursday, February 25th, 2016

Score for two classical guitars tuned a quartertone apart – Named after the rare mineral pictured.

Rendered from Sonar using two instances of “Strum 2.0” – higher quality though a bit less exciting to listen for me.

Rendered from Sibelius using two instances of Kontakt 5’s nylon guitar which added funky slides and some ugly slaps.

This was a proof of concept – I had to fight Sibelius to work with two instances of Kontakt to get the tuning right.

Dedication is a piece for Alto Flute plus an electronic accompaniment (in old time parlance “tape”) in 24 edo (quartertone aka 24 et). Thank you Amy Shankland for providing the voice and also Vox Novus for commissioning this piece. The score is here – if you are interested in performing this piece you can contact me and I will supply the accompaniment for you. If you look at the score you will see that the percussion and effects are not “explicitly” written out. That is because I am availing myself of the samples in the Kontakt packages I purchased. However, the synthesizer and synthesized piano scordatura are accurate.

And the princes bring near the dedication of the altar in the day of its being anointed; yea, the princes bring near their offering before the altar.

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `One prince a day — one prince a day — do they bring near their offering for the dedication of the altar.’

Here is a version translated to 128edo…. it has an odd effect on the harmonies

The Regretful Rat of Mohajira is an improvisation built around a loose framework. For this piece I used two keyboards, one with the midi track arepeggiation on and the other straight through to the shared VST Pianoteq 5 with the tuning below:
