TraderJoe’s Cantus Firmus in 22 edo SuperPyth

The Trader Joe’s Cantus Firmus as a non-strict fugue – in double time as written for woodwinds, flue, alto flue, clarinet, contrabasoon in SuperPyth mode 1
and in half time for those who like the harmonies to linger a bit more.

I’m not sure, after spending have a day sorting this out more or less to my… level of being able to kick it out the door, that while cool because of its source from food packaging with ancient music as its box, that this is a good exercise. Its big, the melody itself is not (to me) very appealing. See what you think.

Spring in February

Monday, February 20th, 2017

Spring in February is an edited improvisation on my Linnstrument playing Pianoteq tuned to SuperPyth mode 1 in 22 edo. I hope you like it. It was nice to step away from 19 edo – and yes I was inspired by Brendan Byrnes excellent xenharmonic tutorial video.

For the Sunset

IMG_1758crop

For the Sunset is a 22 edo composition in 70’s rock ensemble format. I’m using my newly installed GK-3 pick up to run the guitar through a Boss GP-10 guitar processor to obtain a faux 22 edo 12 string (opens the song), a Les Paul through stack like lead (alternates with guitar rig 5 lead) and the bass sound. The straight 22 edo sound is present as a counter weight rhythm with chorus. The drums are a mix of hand placed samples and loops. The composition was recorded and mastered in cakewalk Sonar. Yes the first two chords are the 22 edo equivalent of the opening of a famous 70’s song (I like the sound of the two chords, sorry) but the resemblance ends there. The form is ABCA with B’s chord progression becoming pretty chromatic against drone strings.

valet parking for two 22 edo guitars is a two pass composition based upon a few chords and melodic lines I liked when playing my 22 note per octave guitar. For the record this was the first time I used a capo on a microtonal guitar (to avoid hand strain).

Forked Tongue is a composition from 2009 that I had forgot about. Perhaps it is forgettable, perhaps not… It was composed using Sonar and Garritan Personal Orchestra. The title is only indicative of the picture of a snake my cat found and brought home to show the pet she had found.

Etude for Piano in 22 edo Superpyth [12]

Thursday, July 7th, 2016

etude22

Etude for Piano in 22 edo Superpyth [12] is another in my series of writing something playable for a piano student that has modest skills in a microtonal tuning. Since this tuning is in a 12 note per octave subset of 22 notes per octave the score is to be played as written after setting your sound source to the tuning below. For the sake of comparison the 12 equal version is here.

The full score is here. Academic performance in a setting where a fee is charged is allowed. Any other commercial use without my permission is not. Please write me for permission in such a case, I haven’t told anyone no as of yet 🙂

Its a Queer Time (a microtonal setting of a Robert Graves poem)

Tuesday, April 19th, 2016

Its a Queer Time, a setting of a poem written by Robert Graves and read by Pete Marchetto from librivox tuned in 22 edo, 11 edo, and 43 JI running on 8 different synths. The technology behind the audio is using Gestrument as a performance controller and transmitting its midi output over ethernet using rtpMIDI (thank you Tobias!!) as a Windows surrogate for Apple Bonjour – the end result is that I play the Gestrument on my iPad and Sonar sees the midi from it as a virtual midi controller. Then it is simply a matter of routing each midi channel to separate tracks each with a microtonal aware synthesizer [panned a bit uniquely] – the audio was then added, the midi tracks trimmed appropriately and then married to the video. Since the video and Librivox licenses are public domain by necessity my musical setting of these resources is public domain as well.

For Quincas Moriera – the long version of the music.
