As the title says I spent some time with my 17 et guitar. I purposefully tried doing non-12 sounding stuff with what I think is moderate success. I believe I will have to resort to some “dots” to get some new scales in 17 et down – there just is too much to keep track of when I change strings causing the patterns to be transposed. I apologize for the sloppy classical guitar – ish playing.
The Temple of Clouds is a combination of processed electric 17 edo guitar and timelapse video – at about 5 through 6 minutes you can see a thunderstorm come through. The video was recorded with a Brinno TLC200 time lapse camera.The tuning is unknown though a 17 edo guitar was used to generate the starting point.
Red Sands Maunsell Forts is quasi-ambient piece constructed from loops taken from a 17 edo guitar improvisation and the subsequent loops processed and live sequenced using Sonar’s matrix view (the graphic below). While it doesn’t have the flexibility of Albelton Live, I find the the constructs to be interesting despite being laborious to set up.

These recordings are totally unrehearsed improvisations that took place at my home. As a consequence there is wandering and going down paths that were discarded. I attempted to curate the best parts of an all day session. Much of the music wouldn’t make sense without enduring the development before something jelled. Two pieces of this session were previously released and are included here to complete the session. Instruments – voice, trombone, udderbot, clarinet, 15 edo, 17 edo, 19 edo, 20 edo, 22edo guitars and fretless banjo, guitar and bass, gongs, Tibetan singing bowls, DIY erhu, 31 edo bouzuki, various electronics and percussion. We freely mixed tunings and our compositional goal was to have a good time! We hope you enjoy these recordings.
For two 17 edo guitars in 17 edo’s version of the whole tone scale. The whole tone scale in 17 equal (edo) is unusual in that being an odd-numbered tuning it takes 3 octaves before the scale comes to its starting point. Each step is three steps of the 17 equal 70.59 cent small step – a total of 211.76 cents. I try to keep myself constrained to the scale but do stray at times. Shanidar Cave is a piece in 17 edo that features an electric 17 edo guitar and what is essentially an electric tanpura which ends up making this a sort of fusion of middle eastern and Indian music in a sense. The tanpura is the result of a the installation of a “sitar” buzzing bridge that was to make a spare strat copy into an electric sitar. It turned out to be so difficult to adjust the intonation I gave up and let it lay fallow for a couple years until I hit upon the tanpura idea recently – an instrument without frets and therefore without a need for intonation adjustment. The bridge was sold by eyb guitars for 125 euros. A photo of the bridge is below.
The Loop is an experiment in audio manipulation. It was made by taking sections from a 17 edo electric guitar recording and manipulating the individual notes to change the harmonies and sequences in Melodyne Single Track using their “Direct Note Access” with the Melodyne tuning set to 17 edo. Then the 10 fragments were stretched with Paul’s Extreme Sound stretch. After that the fragments were arranged into two stereo tracks in Sonar, effects applied, exported and normalized.
